Subject: KSL Nightside Project
Date: September 19, 2006
I reflect often on the demise local radio programming.  Anybody who follows this site knows I am an avid supporter of live/local radio.  But time has had a softening effect on my opinions.  I've come to understand that radio passes through an evolution and we will probably be as likely to return to a world of 24/7 live FM music stations as we are to returning to Jack Benny and Amos and Andy-style drama on the AM dial.  Still, it's disappointing though to watch poltical commentary become more homogenized as locally produced programming wanes and national programming wins out.

So I was surprised as anyone to come across a thread in the SaltLakeRadio.com message board about KSL's "nightside project."  My first impression was that "Nigthside" was national.  Surprise: it's local!  Why would KSL hire a staff of over half-a-dozen people for a night show?  I'd say it's the try to attract the younger audience that the FM signal attracts.

The show is very refreshing in my opinion.  It doesn't seem to get overly political and it keeps KSL's news rolling well into the night.  This finally brings, in my opinion, some big market sound to a station that had been slipping into "middle-market mentality." On a given weeknight you may have found me trying to listen to KFI AM 640 to enjoy John Zigler's "hot local talk served up late."  Now I don't have to.  The big "KFI" sound can be found locally.

Response to "KSL Nightside Project," September 19, 2006: "I like the idea of local programming but KSL's 'Nightside' pre-emted my favorite national shows: Lars Larson and "When Radio Was" old time radio. Is there any chance some local station which doesn't have the budget to run a local show with three hosts and six reporters will carry either of these national programs?"
