Calling all airchecks!  Do you have a great aircheck of Utah radio?  Okay, got any "sorta great" airchecks?  Any recordings of the radio at all?  Well, why not share?  It doesn't need to be very old or be of anything particularly special, although that would be even better.  We'd all love for you to submit any recording of the radio you have for future Aircheck of the Week features!  E-mail the editor today!
Aircheck of the Month:  Nights at 94.9 ZHT (2003)
If there's one time slot as important to a CHR as morning drive, it's nights.  Here's a sample of Geller on 94.9 ZHT, thanks to a contributor who mailed this tape to me back when it was new ... four years ago!   To whomever you are: thank you!  I've still got the tape!  And as always, feel free to e-mail me about any airchecks you'd like to add to the archive.  (And shameless self-promotion is O.K.!)

Aircheck Archive
Utah's VFX Composite (2001-2007)
This month, let's go back in time to 2001....and listen to VFX all the way.  The aircheck comes thanks to VFX jock Lindsay who was kind enough to pass along a compsite of VFX of it sounds today, as well as some semi-static-filled saves in my stash of airchecks.  The recording features The Insane Morning Program, Lindsay, Kenton Kelley, Chantelle, and others.

Hitradio "99" KCPX (1986)
After a long pause, the airchecks are back.  My collection is dwindling, so the feature will become "Aircheck of the Month" for the time being.  As always, submissions are appreciated!

Although this aircheck isn't anything fancy, it's a great example of non-sweeper driven radio of yester-year.

Skinny Johnny Mitchell on KCPX 1320 (circa 1975)
Aircheck of the Week:  Some people say Skinny Johnny had the highest rated night time radio show in Salt Lake radio history, even today.  A fantastic taste of 70's top-40 radio, and the first in a series of airchecks courtesy of Jordan Mitchell, Greg Carlisle, and Paul Smith who all worked to preserve these airchecks over four decades.

Sponsored by AM to FM: Now on DVD!

KSOP Celebrates 50 Years (2005)
"In 1955 Henry Hilton signed on KSOP 1370...."  A well produced montage explaining the history and the music that shaped KSOP, the Salt Lake radio dial, and country music everywhere over the past five decades.  Produced by John Greenwell and Christopher John.  Aircheck is courtesy of a Utah Radio Guide visitor!  Thank you!

94.9 ZHT becomes 97.1 ZHT (December 2003)
Aircheck of the Month:  "You know, one radio frequency can only take so much," said Stu Stanek, General Manager for Clear Channel Salt Lake City, "and this girl's had it."

Seconds later, ZHT left it's home at 94.9 FM forever.

Kevin Stanfield, KSL 1160 (1999)
Before Nightside, KSL's night line-up had been dominated by syndicated national programming for a good part of a decade.  In the late-90's KSL produced a local show, "KSL Tonight" hosted by Kevin Stanfield.  This program is particularly interesting, because the night's topic was "Y2K."  Kevin ponders the question of just "how serious" Y2K would be.  A great aircheck in retrospect.  Guests include Sen. Bob Bennett.

This Aircheck is 42 Minutes long.  Streaming is highly recommended.
CLIP IS CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE

Rick Dunn, KUBL "K-Bull 93" (2005)
And to wrap off 2006 ... K-Bull 93's "Buck Off" program from an evening last year.  Listeners call in to decide which songs to "buck off" until a number one hit is chosen.  Rick has great talent, especially interacting with callers.  This aircheck is courtesy of a contributor to this site!  Thank you, and Merry Christmas everybody!

Kelly Hammer, KUTQ "Q99" (1995)
Stopping to remember "Rock 99" can make one feel retro.  To think back to "Q99" makes me wonder where a decade went.  The "Q" seems to have some of the wackiest sweepers I've ever heard ... a few of which I try not to think about much.  Keep an ear out for the context of a spot mentioning Brian Foxx's name.  Remember, Brian is now the morning man at FM 100 ... boy, his career has come a long way!

Kramer, Slammin' Sammy - KUDD "Power 107.9" (2003)
Remember a few days ago?  We were all panicked about SARS, the Usana Amphitheater was brand new, and Fifty Cent was (sadly) all the rage.  Actually, that was a few years ago!  This aircheck brought back a few memories, as I began to realized how fast three-and-a-half years have cruised by.

KUBL 93.3 "K-Bull 93" Sign On (1993)
Before 1995 you'd find Jon and Dan rockin' the dial on Z93.  One day a new owner came to town, and 93.3 has never been the same since.

Tracy Lee, Utah State Fair, KCPX 98.7 "Power 99" (1989)
Before "the Bee" there was "Variety 98.7" and before that was "Power 99."  This aircheck captures not only summer's close but the state fair's close as well.  Jingle lovers, enjoy the TM Century jingles originally created for a station in Texas.  I found that even though the music takes me back a few decades, the commercials really brought home the eighties feel.  Enjoy!

Todd and Erin, First Day, B98.7 (2002)
During the summer of 2001, Todd and Erin disappeared from the Fisher, Todd, and Erin morning show on KISN 97.  Six months later and one huge billboard campaign later . . .

KEGA 101.5 "The Eagle" Signs On (2003)
Three years ago I was invited to watch "Finding Nemo" at one of Utah County's plentiful dollar theatres.  Some took dates, others took time off work, and of I .... took my WM-GX688 Walkman recorder and some broadcast headphones.  Remember the part of the movie where Nemo and that fish with the bad memory are stuck in the dark cave?  That's when the Eagle was born ... 12 Midnight, October 15, 2003.

KCGL 105.9 (1985)
KCGL Centerville!  I really don't have much to say about it; I didn't even know it existed when it was on the air.  It's certainly an eclectic taste in music.  Biff and Barb of "The End" were two notable disc jockies featured in this short aircheck.

KSL 1160 Sampler (1985-2003)
As I draw back on the memories of my adolescent years, I remember my parents making the switch to KSL from KALL.  Apparantly KALL radio had let my mother's favorite host, Hans Petersen, go.  About that time KSL made the switch to news, and so my parents made the switch to KSL.  The election of '94, the O.J. Simpson trial, and later the Clinton impeachment scandal helped make KSL a home fixture.  The amazing thing is that thirteen years later, if I visit my parent's house, I'll find they'll still have KSL blasting through the house.  All I can say is that KALL should've never let Hans Petersen go . . .

Jim Morales and Rob Boshard on KISN 97 (1992)
An oldie, but a goldie.  Jim Morales and Rob Boshard from 1992.
